Beyond The Dawn Radio recently interviewed Ed Roman, and the transcription is now available on their website. Here’s an excerpt:
Tell us about this teacher side of Ed Roman.
Ed Roman : I started teaching in high school. I was very advanced for a kid and in my last year in high school I stared teaching grade 9s in my spares to make a little extra money.. I realized then along with the pressure from parents that I need something to fall back on and teaching keeps me connected to music.. I think that having a learning disability, which I see as a gift, has given me a greater understanding of comprehension and ability to approach logic from many different perplexities. All people learn at different speeds and obtain information differently. I really love the challenge and it has made me stronger as a teacher and musician.. I’ll never stop teaching.. Some of the mentors I aspired to be like such as Dizzy Gillespie would never hesitate to explain ideas to anyone that wanted to know.. He was one of the many influences of mine that shared the same philosophy. It’s what keeps things strong.. Let every person be my mentor so I can learn from them. Good and bad…
If a stranger were to walk up to you and say, “Describe to me your music” what would you say? Wait, there’s a catch. This stranger is counting your words. You can only describe your music in 10 words or less. Humor, life, love, anger, questioning, intellectual, radical, message, sophisticated dirt.
